Introduction

Teaching physical education is as much about teaching life skills as it is about physical activity. Students need to learn how to develop their motor skills for their future physical activities. One of the skills that can be introduced to and practiced with young students is the control and flexibility of hand joints. In this teaching experience, I will share my lesson plan on the "Flexible Hand Joint Exercise" and reflect on how I can improve my instruction for the benefit of the students.

Lesson Plan

The objective of the lesson is to practice and improve the flexibility and control of hand joints for young students aged between 7-8 years old. The exercise involves stretching, opening and closing your fingers, touching your fingers one to another, and hand rotation exercises. It is a simple yet effective exercise that develops fine motor skills.

The lesson starts with a warm-up exercise to increase the blood flow in the students' hands. The exercise involves shaking their hands vigorously for 30 seconds. Students then sit down in a circle and follow the instructions of the teacher in performing the hand joint exercises, which are demonstrated by the teacher and then repeated by the students. After completing the set of exercises, students are given a free play period to explore their newfound flexibility and control, and perform the exercise on their own.

Reflection

Overall, I was pleased with how the lesson went. The students were engaged and seemed to enjoy the exercise. However, when reflecting on the instruction aspect of the lesson, I realized that some of the instructions were unclear, which caused confusion among some students. For example, when directing the hand rotation exercise, I should have been more specific on the direction of the rotation. Some students did not rotate their hands in the same direction as the teacher, which led to incorrect practice. In the future, I plan to provide more detailed and specific instructions, including visual aids, to ensure that students fully understand the exercise.

In addition to the improved instructions, I also plan to modify the warm-up activity to be more age-appropriate. While the shaking hand exercise was effective at increasing blood flow, it was not very engaging for the students. Instead, I plan to develop a new warm-up activity, such as finger games or clapping games, which would be both effective and enjoyable for the students.

Conclusion

Teaching physical education requires that instructors have effective and engaging lesson plans for their students. By reflecting on the "Flexible Hand Joint Exercise" lesson, I was able to identify areas where I could improve my instruction and make modifications to the lesson plan to be more effective in the future. It is through ongoing reflection and improvement that we become better educators and provide the best possible learning experiences for our students.
